Submarine on Steering Committee at Carbon to Sea’s OAE Model Skill Assessment Workshop

OAE Model Skill Assessment Workshop attendees in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany

From June 29 to July 4, 2026, Carbon to Sea convened the Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement Model Skill Assessment Workshop in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. The workshop brought together 35 researchers, practitioners, and private-sector participants to develop practical guidelines for assessing the skill of regional ocean biogeochemical models used to quantify carbon dioxide removal from ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE).

Submarine Scientific co-founder Veronica Tamsitt served on the workshop steering committee, helping shape the scope and design of the workshop, select participants, and lead one of the working groups. Across five groups, participants focused on three core elements of model skill assessment for OAE monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV): fit-for-purpose model criteria, model-observation comparison, and uncertainty quantification.

The workshop was designed around approaches that can be implemented using today’s observations, modeling tools, and project constraints, while also identifying R&D priorities that could improve model assessment over the coming years. Its outcomes will contribute to public model skill assessment guidelines as well as a peer-reviewed perspective paper outlining longer-term research priorities for OAE modeling and MRV.
