Submarine Scientific awarded Frontier Innovation grant to advance ocean modeling for marine CDR

Submarine Scientific has been awarded an Innovation grant from Frontier to advance GPU-native regional ocean modeling for marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). The grant is one of four awards in a new Frontier R&D cohort focused on advancing safe, scalable ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE).
The project will develop new open-source capabilities for multi-scale model nesting and differentiable biogeochemical modeling, building on the NumericalEarth.jl, Oceananigans.jl, and OceanBioME.jl modeling ecosystem. Together, these capabilities will make it possible to simulate ocean processes across scales—from nearfield mixing to regional circulation—while enabling new approaches to sensitivity analysis, uncertainty quantification, model optimization, and observing-system design.
The goal is to make high-fidelity ocean modeling for mCDR monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) faster, more cost-effective, and better able to quantify and reduce uncertainty. All software developed through the project will be open source and available to the broader ocean modeling and CDR communities.
