Submarine and Carbon to Sea announce new project to develop OAE Data Commons platform
Carbon to Sea Initiative has funded Submarine Scientific to lead a new project to develop the OAE Data Commons - an online hub designed to bring together academic and private sector field data from ocean alkalinity enhancement research in one accessible, standardized platform.
The OAE Data Commons builds on the community-driven OAE Data Management Protocol, lead by Submarine Scientific in 2025, and is designed to make OAE field research data easier to standardize, discover, access, and use for independent analysis. By standardizing and harmonizing datasets across projects, the OAE Data Commons aims to accelerate cross-site comparisons, support policymaker review, and foster collaboration between academic and private sector researchers, while accommodating both open and appropriately protected datasets.
The OAE Data Commons is a platform of a broad suite of OAE data management tools being developed by Submarine and funded by Carbon to Sea, including a search portal for accessing open and proprietary OAE field data, and the Metadata Builder and Compliance Checker: interactive tools that guide users through creating protocol-compliant metadata files and automatically validate submitted datasets.
